Earlier games such as brelan, poque, and primero may have influenced the development of the game.

Many people think that the name “poker” comes from the Spanish word poque, but it is not clear. One possibility is that the name comes from a French word for primero. Or, it may be related to the German word pochen. Regardless, the game has spread throughout the world. Interestingly, it has become one of the most popular pastimes worldwide.
